Virtualization is a method of running multiple independent virtual operating systems on a single physical computer. Virtualization allows users to maximize physical resources to take best advantage of their hardware investment. This process enables the transformation of hardware into software, i.e.,"virtualize" the hardware resources on an x86-based server and components - including the CPU, RAM and hard drives. This creates a single virtual server that can safely run several operating systems and applications at the same time on a single computer.
Server virtualization can help lower your costs by optimizing utilization while increasing agility. This enables you to respond rapidly to changes in the marketplace. There are three primary levels of server virtualization that address these issues:
- Server Consolidation - Bring unmanageable server sprawl under control.
- Software Automation - Transform the software lifecycle by using virtualization to reduce costs, increase productivity, and improve quality in development and test.
- Desktop Manageability/Security - Improve manageability and security of desktops to lower costs, reduce risk, and improve flexibility of desktop infrastructure.
