White Paper

Description:
Advanced technology allows businesses to get maximum bang out of hardware buck while reducing server counts and support costs. In a virtual environment, one OS (operating system) does not consume the entire resources of one x86-based server. Instead, the virtual machine runs as the hardware platform and manages the unique OS and application requirements.

“Virtualization will become a standard in the infrastructure environment as a core enabling technology,” says Ute Albert, marketing manager for virtualization, enterprise storage and software at HP. “The key for customers will be how do they take the most advantage of virtualization environments and how do they manage it and automate the environment.”

Cost Reduction
The primary driver for server virtualization is the reduction in total cost of ownership (TCO). This is accomplished through the reduction of physical hardware resources and management overhead of those resources along with a consolidated computing environment and associated costs, such as server cooling and electricity.

Of these benefits, server consolidation is one of the most prominent advantages to taking a virtualized approach. By virtualizing resources, you reduce the actual number of physical servers needed to manage the same application environments and operating systems. In many cases, these servers are being underutilized.
