The world’s workforce is more mobile than ever before, influenced in large part by the desire of employees for greater flexibility. This mobility is changing the way we define work. IDC reports that the mobile workforce, which includes mobile workers and remote workers, is large and growing: “The worldwide mobile worker population is set to increase from 758.6 million in 2006, accounting for 24.8 percent of the worldwide workforce, to 1.0 billion in 2011, accounting for 30.4 percent of the workforce. In the U.S., IDC expects 73 percent of the workforce to be mobile by 2011.”
The impact of mobility on employees is obvious. But what does it mean for business managers? Some may cringe at the thought of managing and supporting distributed workers; however, implementing mobile work strategies opens the door to tangible benefits for companies, business managers and employees alike, including gaining access to top talent, increased employee productivity, reduced commuting costs and more.
