Description:
Growth is inherent to IT organizations, and this Maryland government agency is no exception. The agency is charged with providing IT resources to the Governor’s office and other state agencies. Having room for growth is critical. The IT team is dedicated to meeting its government users’ requests for services, applications and innovative ideas for improving services to citizens.

Since it can do more with the same amount of space, the agency is a model for growth within the Maryland state government. The Department has reclaimed more than 80U of rack space, and is now planning to accommodate a similar server and storage virtualization project for the Governor’s office, which helps to fulfill its mandate. In fact, it is a model for “green” growth for state government, since the new equipment uses less power than the 38 physical servers did and requires less cooling. The IT team will not have to install more cooling for the 30 servers from the Governor’s office.

Server utilization has increased from 3-to-5 percent to 45-to-50 percent, meaning processing resources are not sitting idle while still leaving plenty of headroom for expansion. The state is getting more value from its hardware investment.
