from  Microsoft

White Paper

Description:
Application development pros that rely on Red Hat Enterprise Linux should be worried about the vendor’s new competitors. Red Hat will be hurt by customer defections driven by Oracle’s and Microsoft’s moves. Of the two threats to Red Hat’s growth and future viability, the Microsoft Novell deal offers customers the highest immediate value.

MICROSOFT’S SUPPORT WILL GIVE SUSE RENEWED RELEVANCE
SLE is a solid Linux distribution; it is the preferred distribution on IBM mainframes, for example. But under Novell’s ownership, SLE had fallen to a distant second to Red Hat in the market. With Microsoft’s help, SLE will be a more effective competitor to Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

  • SLE is likely to be better than Red Hat for mixed shops. Microsoft will promote SLE only as a complement to Windows-based systems. A dedicated Microsoft sales force will work with enterprises that are committed to both Linux and Windows to optimize the mixed environment. Novell has joined Microsoft’s Interop Vendor Alliance; Red Hat and Oracle are absent. As a result of the interop work of Microsoft and Novell, SLE is likely to be the better option for Linux interoperability with Windows than Red Hat.
  • Microsoft’s commitment to SLE is deep. Microsoft’s decision to sell Novell support agreements for SLE Linux was surprisingly aggressive and indicates the depth of its commitment to the Novell partnership.
