Novell White Paper Sample
Directory Structure
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux differ on some aspects of their directory structures. Some configuration files may not be located exactly where a Red Hat Enterprise Linux administrator would expect them. The SUSE Linux Enterprise Server documentation is very helpful in determining the location of each configuration file. In terms of philosophy, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is closer to and adheres to the LSB/FSH and Red Hat Enterprise Linux is more concerned with backward compatibility of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Solaris administrators will easily become familiar with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.
Basic Commands
There are some basic configuration commands that differ between SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Instead of using system-config-* or redhat-config-*, SUSE Linux Enterprise employs the use of yast2* for certain configuration activities. For a full list and description of these commands, please refer to the Red Hat to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server training module, which is free from Novell. There is an additional document that is part of the deployment kit, available from Novell, which covers this topic in more depth.
