Installing security on an Exchange server has many advantages. A smaller organization can have cost savings. Figure 1 compares the cost, over three years, of purchasing a brand name appliance with the cost of purchasing Sunbelt Ninja, which is installed directly on the Exchange server. Smaller organizations of 50 to 100 users will find a fairly significant cost advantage.

In smaller organizations the cost of messaging, on a per-user basis, is high simply because you are not spreading the cost over a large base of users. The smaller the organization, the more important cost per user becomes. Therefore, installing security software directly on an Exchange server will have positive cost ramifications and save money in the long run.

Another reason to install your security directly on the Exchange server is that labor costs are lower when you do not have additional servers. There is no need to configure and maintain additional hardware. There is less to go wrong when you do not have additional hardware to manage.
