The number of mobile and remote workers is rising, beginning with the number of people who work from home and travel. This is not a new trend or one that has not been recognized throughout IT organizations everywhere. The most immediate impact of this trend is the increased security risks generated by mobile employees. While it is easy to highlight examples of the problems with lost laptops, IDC believes that over time these problems will become more pervasive due to the decreasing size and increasing capabilities of the devices.
IDC believes that the best way to support mobile and remote workers is to focus on addressing the underlying causes of the problems and preventing as many of them as possible. IT organizations that are able to accomplish this will be in a much better position to address problems when they occur. It is our belief that IT should be trying to address as many problems through automation as possible. In this context, automation involves topics such as asset management, patch management, remote monitoring and diagnostics, and configuration management.
