For authorization, there are several access control methods that can be implemented across a network. However, role-based access control (RBAC) has proven to be the best approach to ensure effective security policies are in place. RBAC enforces access control policies that are determined by the system and not the application or information owner.
RBAC is commonly found in government, military and other enterprises where role definitions are well defined, the pace of change is not that fast and the supporting human resource environment is capable of keeping up with changes to an identity regarding their roles and privileges.
Today, in the age of digitization, there is a convergence between physical access control and computer access control. Modern access control (more commonly referred to in the industry as
"identity management systems") now provides an integrated set of tools to manage what a user can access physically, electronically and virtually as well as provides an audit trail for the lifetime of the user and their interactions with the enterprise.
