White Paper

Description:
For many years now, organizations have relied upon standard methods of backup and recovery using tape devices and backup agents or scripts. While this has provided a level of security and comfort, business needs have changed and standard methods of backup cannot keep pace. This white paper reviews the benefits that point-in-time technology offers to tackle problems, explores the differences among similar techniques for database backup and recovery, and then recommends best practices for a rapid recovery of critical information.

The traditional methods of backup and restore make meeting the short RPOs and RTOs of today’s businesses an expensive strategy for a business in terms of loss of revenue and people time. To address the changing needs of business, new ways of addressing the demand for “instant backup” of ever-increasing data volumes needs to be found.

Storage virtualization has enabled Point-In-Time (PiT) copy technologies to be brought into the SAN Fabric. The drawback that remains with many of these solutions using copy on write PiTs is increased load on these systems, thus requiring large CPU power and large cache subsystems to provide functionality even for basic volume management.

However, there are other alternatives. In particular, this paper will discuss the use of HP SAN Virtualization Services Platform (SVSP) Business Copy and Continuous Access PiT Copy in delivering enhanced rapid application recovery solutions, with a focus on Oracle and Exchange application environments. It also examines how the use of PiT copy-enhanced technology can provide higher performance, high data integrity, faster recovery compared to other approaches, and most importantly, data consistency.
