The school district’s legacy infrastructure could not support such a vision with core educational programs running on 114 servers, one-third of which were antiquated. Some were in the district’s small central data center and others were distributed across 30 local school sites. The servers were too small for the job they were required to do. It was time-consuming to back them up, and the school could not back up some remote servers. There was no disaster recovery capability. Orbaugh wanted to consolidate the dispersed servers in the data center where he could back them up and protect them.

Orbaugh did his homework and came up with a way to realize his vision: virtualizing servers using Dell, Dell EqualLogic and VMware technologies for the server, storage and software infrastructure.
