As a result, most employees are using four- and even five- year- old PCs, and for the most part, these PCs are running the almost-nine-year-old Microsoft Windows XP operating system (OS). By extending the useful life of their computing equipment, companies have been able to avoid the cost of upgrading, but the systems are not necessarily up to the task of supporting today’s high-performance business software.
A January 2010 survey from network management specialist Spiceworks found that small to medium-size businesses (SMBs) are accelerating plans to migrate to Windows 7. The survey polled more than 1,500 IT professionals around the globe and it revealed a 20 percent increase in the number of SMBs planning to speed up their adoption rates of Windows 7 following the official launch.
