Riverbed offers the Cascade solution for Application-Aware Network Performance Management (ANPM) for use in both enterprise and communications services settings. The Cascade product technology was obtained by Riverbed when they acquired Mazu Networks in early 2009. Until that time, Riverbed was focused on their core business line of WAN Optimization Controllers and worked mostly with third-party technology partners for performance monitoring and reporting.

Originally designed to deliver intelligent network based anomaly detection (a.k.a. NBAD) for security monitoring purposes, the core Cascade architecture was already being transitioned to more broad use for network operations prior to the change in ownership. Since that time, Riverbed has continued to invest in the Cascade suite and now promotes the line as a vendor-independent, enterprise-class ANPM solution.
