Since the dawn of the business-computing age, companies have had an ambivalent relationship with digital files, images and other unstructured content. Such content is easier to store, deliver, access and modify than its physical counterparts. But these very advantages can create significant challenges for companies, and for the IT departments charged with managing and protecting the digital content.

One obvious problem: the ease of storing documents and other files—combined with the availability of high-capacity and low-cost storage—has resulted in massive collections of unstructured content in every corporation. By some estimates, this content is increasing at a rate of approximately 50 percent to 85 percent each year. Of course, departments must do more than simply store this ballooning content. They must also make it easy for employees and others to find and access any file while also ensuring that sensitive content isn’t exposed to, or modified by, unauthorized users. Beyond providing access and security, managers must implement content backup and recovery mechanisms, all while delivering required system uptime and performance service levels.
